Springende Gene in Petunia: Vorschlag für ein Demonstrationsprojekt

Das Referendum über die Genschutzinitiative am 7. Juni 1998 hat einem grossen Publikum gezeigt, welche enorme Möglichkeiten die Gentechnologie für die Grundlagenwissenschaft, die Medizin und Landwirtschaft hat. Es hat aber auch eine grosse Verunsicherung in der Bevölkerung zu Tage gefördert. Dass mangelndes Basiswissen dabei eine Rolle spielt, ist wohl unbestritten. Wissenschaftler haben die Pflicht, die Bevölkerung weiterhin über Gentechnologie zu informieren.
Das vorliegende Projekt will das Wissen über Gentechnologie auf einfache, anschauliche und unbedrohliche Weise fördern.

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: BENEFITS OF TRANSGENIC SOYBEANS

Soybeans and other crops have been improved genetically for many decades through traditional crop breeding – a technique that requires that species be sexually compatible. With the development of biotechnology methods, scientists have the ability to transfer single genes from one living organism into another, regardless of species or sexual compatibility. Varieties that are developed through the transfer of genes between species that are not sexually compatible are referred to as "transgenic."

When Transgenes Wander, Should We Worry?

The products of plant improvement are not absolutely safe, and we cannot expect transgenic crops to be absolutely safe either. Recognition of that fact suggests that creating something just because we are now able to do so is an inadequate reason for embracing a new technology. If we have advanced tools for creating novel agricultural products, we should use the advanced knowledge from ecology and population genetics as well as social sciences and humanities to make mindful choices about to how to create the products that are best for humans and our environment.

Potential failsafe mechanisms against the spread and introgression of transgenic hypervirulent biocontrol fungi

Microbial biocontrol agents are typically inefficient owing to the evolutionary necessity to be in balance with their hosts to survive. If transgenetically rendered hypervirulent, however, they could be competitive alternatives to pesticides. Potential means are delineated to prevent, contain or mitigate uncontrollable spread of hypervirulent biocontrol organisms, mutations that increase their host range, and the sexual or asexual introgression of hypervirulence genes into pathogens of other organisms.
